Yesss-I-can ;} -- because I'll be bringing it with me to ComiCon 94! Believe It Or Not, I'm holding said cereal box (swaddled in a giant Zip-Loc) in my hands _right now_! Enough emailers and Trekkers have asked about this legend...so it is being gently pressed against my Commodore 1084S screen, letting its natural radiation field do the rest (...hey, this is a _great_ way to warm your fingers...). Hit *Reverse*, and voila! [Pardon the "Dark Spock" effect] ################################################################### True Story: In the Summer of `69, I hitchhiked across Europe for three months. Just before my return flight from Gatwick, I bought several boxes of Kellogg's Sugar Smacks in a small London grocery. It wasn't (necessarily) because I knew what Caledonian Airlines' in-flight meals would be...but that the United Kingdom sold cereal boxes I had never before seen -- and never would again. STAR TREK's Mr. Spock was featured on the front of these boxes, holding a phaser that looked more like a toy squirt-gun/camera. The back featured pictures of five collector buttons, with art work on par with Spock's picture (surpassed by ASCII-art below). It also had the Enterprise flying with its saucer upside-down. And all sides were covered with information that plumbed new depths of wry British humour. They did seem to take TREK's "5-Year Mission" seriously (note the "To `71" on the front). ____________________________________________________________ | /) /) | _ ___ _ _ ___ _ __ | | /) // /)// () | ( ` / /| /_) / /_)/_ /_/ | | /||// _ ////_ _ _ / | __) / /-|/ \ / / /__/ \ | | /,| /,)/////,)/ )/ )/) | _ _ _ _ __ | | //||( ///////////////,| | /|/| /( `( `// )/|/ _) / / | |(/ ||/\_(_((_/( /( //\_) | / ' |/__)__)/(_// / /_ / / | | |_) __//_// | | | _ | /| | | /\ |||| /\ /\ | \ | /|| | | |||||/\>|/\|||\| |\ //|| | | \ |||||| |L||||/| |\\ _.--"""""""--. // || | | \ ||||||T|| || / | \\ .=" "=, || | | </>|/||/|||||||\ | \\,' ``.| | | / / / ||||||\> | , : | | | . : | | /\ |\ /| /\ /\ || />/\ | : aMIttti==iii+iii+=;, : | || V ||/\||/\>||//| : BMMMWWWMMMBXVVYYi=;, :___| | \ || |||L|||| |'/ \ | : BBMMWWMMMMBXXVYIi;;:,, :.__| | \ ||V||| ||| |.\ \ | t XIBMMMMMBRXVi+==::;::: ', | |</>|| |||||||/>||\\</>| At VY+=+IIMBi=:,,=i=;::::, ;. | | / || |||||| / || \>/ | YX=VI+=,:=WB;:::=,,::;;:;: ;;' | |_________________________| VMiRtItIRBWR:.tXVVYtiI==;: ;;Y: | | // `XIWMMBBMRMBi;,XXRRXXVYt+;; ;A;' | | // ViWWMBBBBBY;;,XRRRXXVi;;;:,;;; | | // `VMMMMWBMMY;=+XRRXVYI;:;;:,C; | | // SPACE ENERGY COMES XRBMMMYYV+,:;XRXXIt+;:;+,+;; | |<< `RRBMMBYt;:::+VXVi=;;:;=+;;' /| | \\ FROM SUGAR SMACKS BRBBBMMRRIttYYYY=;;;;;==; //| | \\ VRRRRRRRXVYYttit=:::::=; // | | \\ _____ YRRRXVIYiit+++i=:;::;== // | | // /|===|\ +RRXIIYVI;i=;=t=;:::;:; << | | // || _ ||\ RRXVYi+==;;=iY;::::,;; \\ | | // ||/ \||O) `XRXVVVYItitII=::;,::; \\ | |// [|( @ )|/] `VRRBBXVYYIti:::,:::; \\| |< `||\_/|| | IYVYYYIti+=:,,,:::;; \| |\\ || [] | IVI==;;;:,,,,Jittlov\ /| | \\ ,vMMR""b c, / "=;;;;=""" \__//| | \\ VVMM$;;; $;; __/ __/ // | | \\ ;AVMMM,,,:MM; __--- \ ____-- << | | \\ :VMMMn;;;IAM;_-- , \__________--- \\ | | >> `AMMMM,,,iCV; /| \\| | // `VMMnn;;"Y", /@| _ _ _ _ \| | // YVMM,,,;;; /_ | ( `/_)/ )/ `/_/ | | // YVMM;p,,;; '~ \| _ __)/ (_/(_,/~\ | | // YVMV;;;;: __ ` _(_) /| |// IMMm'__ ___(__)____ (__)_) //| |======== ___(__)_((_)_(__)_)_(_))_)_)_ << | | || _((_((__)__(_(__(__)__)(__)_(_)) FREE \\| | || (__)((_(__)_))_(__)_((__)_((__)")) \| | || \================================/ STAR TREK | | || ''\______________________________/ | | || // \ / BADGES | | ||// \__________________________/ ______ | | | / \ _ / | | 10 1/2 oz SIZE (c) Paramount Pictures Corp 1969 | |____________________________________________________________| A few box paragraphs (pictures best left to your imagination): "THE TRANSICATOR - If Mr. Spock wants to send a message to an alien-language planet...`SUGAR SMACKS are honey sweet and give you space energy'...he speaks directly into the Transicator and presses the translate-button..." [..uh-huhhhh..] Further Proof (with b&w photo) is on the cover (with article) in the #8 issue (1992) of FLAKE Magazine (people actually collect this stuff), "A friend of Leonard Nimoy recently slapped down $1000 for one of these boxes as a birthday present for his pal. He says Nimoy hadn't known it existed." :@ Whoa!! Looking at the FLAKE magazine picture...the box looks _different_, with NASA stickers...and with a 1970 copyright..! *I* HAVE THE FIRST PRINTING!
