Probably so that he could avail himself of one of the many GIF "thumbnail sketch" programs that are out there and make a small screen icon for each ASCII picture, so that he could paste up a "photo-album" of about forty thumb-nail sketch icons at a time to his screen. Paging through ASCII pictures forty at a time is probably faster than having to wade through each one individually, provided that you have the disk space for storing the icon pixel maps. It makes sense to me!
