If you have Linux, use blender, its free and it does most of 
the stuff the other programs will do.. But its still 
in the beta stages.. It is promissed to be free as 
long as its maker is supported (one guy), if he can make a living, 
it will go on being ported and replicated and expanded.. 
Its not your typical Linux program, its a pearl among penguins..


If you have Windows.. 

Animation Master or True Space (both very feature-full, seem 
to have a following).. 

Lightwave maybe, 3DMax maybe..

Forget Maya.. It has a little ways to  go, and is overhyped.. 

Maya Artisan (yeah I think so)..

Softimage is  pretty good I hear.. 

Alias or Rhino (what's the difference?)..
