We had some >: really insistent customers of the variety "Who the hell are you to >: tell me what I can or cannot post!" So Ed K wisely created a >: members.non-text group, and the HTMLers went there. I noticed two >: things. First of all, the posts quickly became very large, full of >: graphics, animations, etc. Second, the group died down when they >: realized the action was in the text (the message) not the dressing >: (the medium). >------------------------------------------------------------------------ All of MSN's local groups are HTML allowed. There's not any problem with this, because MSN's news servers only allow outlook Express to log on to them, and OE does HTML. There are many posts, and the majority are in HTML. The best part is helping others learn how to use it--one of our members even went and made a whole tutorial, on how to snag and use images, javascripts, etc., in posts. I see more great images than I would see just anywhere on the web... New tricks pop up too--on April Fool's Day, someone set up a (ActiveX Control?) something that accused the reader (personally--by MSN id) of spamming.. lol it tricked everybody. And then I used it later on the same day . (Even my signature is in HTML. OE pares it down for plaintext posts. It's got an IMAGE, a STYLESHEET, a TABLE [I can hear you screaming], and links to web pages and chat rooms. It used to have a counter, but I got rid of it when it died :( and it was up so high!) But then, "members.non-text" doesn't sound like something that could survive as a newsgroup anyway. What kind of /community/ would that have? Here's a favorite quote I saw ;) in response to a plain text post: [Re: Woooo...look what *I* can do!!!] [1/9/98 10:23 AM EDT] >What kind of sick, twisted weirdo are you? Posting in plain text? You cannot post to >this newsgroup unless you have pictures, moving things, funky fonts/backgrounds, sounds >or marquees in your messages. Given all the wonder service these servers have provided, >it's only fair to waste as much bandwidth as possible. [Both the usenet and the local news servers go down at least once a week, usually on weekends. hence the 'wonder service'...] >>BKNambo -- Sunflash_the_Mace@msn.com World Domination through Trivia!
