 Yesterday was a beautiful day in the playground.  I noticed a lovely
 little girl, around 4 years old, whom I had spoken to several times
 during the winter in an indoor play space in the local library.
 I remembered happily the second time she saw me, and ran up to me and said
 excitedly, "Do you remember me?"  I was thrilled that she wanted to be my
 friend.

 Yesterday, when I saw her on the jungle gym, I said excitedly, "HI!"
 trying to continue our relationship.  She looked up at me and, in a bored
 and distracted manner, said "hi" and went on playing. A few minutes
 later, she ran up to another woman and said excitedly, "Do you remember
 me?" in the same tone of voice she had used with me "when our love was new".

 I felt totally betrayed and privately called her a promiscuous little slut.

 In the afternoon of a dull, spring day (for spring days spent indoors are
 always dull), she sat and waited for True Meanness to take hold.  She
 wondered in which way it might take form .  Would she be enveloped and
 overwhelmed by it?  Or would it descend and merely float the way
 cigarette smoke lingers in the air.  She waited and waited and waited.
 The afternoon passed.  Nothing enveloped her.  Nothing descended.
 Nothing happened.

 I found myself pondering today upon the development of some of the great
 and undefinable character traits.... jollyness, inscrutability,
 taciterness, meanness. It suddenly struck me that these coveted and
 singular traits appear in a person when they lesat expect them.... like at
 birth, or during a four day blacked out drinking binge, of in a fit of
 apoplectic rage, or while admiring a flower.

 It filled me with the wonder of discovery to have this concept dawn on me.
