 My god this item is fascinating.

 First of all, Aurora going back to your post #627, your assumption is
 completely wrong. I did have the same sense of compassion for the person
 who killed my father as I do for OJ. And the situation is not indifferent
 in the sense that it was another family member. But, Ann in her post #626
 says it all. He's obviously a tortured human being at this moment, and
 showing compassion for him does not all negate the compassion and sympathy
 one feels for the surviving family members. How could you not feel sorry for
 the children yesterday? All I could think was "gee ... I hope somebody
 convinces them to go make a puzzle or watch a video, and NOT turn on the TV
 or radio" .

  ... because it was on every station. To think, that for a few hours every
 station (as documented in this item) showed that white bronco going at the
 speed limit, while speculating as to what was happening inside, is
 unbelievable. It's somewhat disgusting. And the fact that everyone watched
 it and was riveted by it says something significant.
 What, I'm not sure.

 It is, however, probably related to the same things that let him get
 off the hook so easily, which is detestable, for spousal abuse and battery.
