Inquisitor Guidelines 1 9/20/94 To sum up what is Inquisitor, I would say the logical end result of the soupification of various media, art, culture, and technology. Not in a cyberpunk-axcess-mondo-wired way. In a matter-of-fact-down-to-earth way. No hype. No glitz. No unnecessary interface. Content dense. Informative. Not self-indulgent. INQUISITOR welcomes contributions; what follows are general guidelines for submitting material for review: (Articles submitted for review should not require a degree in strucuralism to understand. They should not contain any of the following phrases: Barthes, post-modern, information superhighway, generation X. Having tongue firmly planted in cheek helps immensely as well.) There are many different sections of Inquisitor; each with a specific "voice" if you will: % Features are longer essays which comprise the bulk of the magazine. Features are usually included with references along with additional material related in subject to the main text which is presented in boxes or sidebars. % "Back of Book" pieces are shorter editorial pieces which can be found in the back of the magazine. These articles can be very opinionated. % Project articles are descriptive pieces which present usually tech-based artworks or tech projects of a decidedly low-tech do-it-yourself nature. They require detailed reference material. (see below) % Media, Copyright, Interface, Reviews are included in the Networker section of the magazine and are usually short pieces which go into some aspect of the rubrik they fall under. FEATURE ARTICLES: Ideas for articles should be submitted as as abstract; a summary of the main ideas of the article including premise and conclusion. Completed articles are welcome as well; ideally, they should be referenced and should describe how to obtain further information on the subject matter. PROJECT/ART DESCRIPTION: The following should be used as a guideline as to what is needed for a project article: Design pages for project descriptions require most of the following elements; this might also help make a more cohesive description of the project. 1) Title of project 1a) Short overview of concept 1b) Long description of concept 2) Image (conceptual) 2a) Image of final project implemented 2b) Image of components on board 2c) Image of components involved 2d) Text list of components and reference 3) Image (schematic) 3a) Text describing schematic 4) Text (computer code) 5) Image for background (optional; very light) related to concept of project 6) Text captions for images 7) Text bio of project author(s) ILLUSTRATIONS AND OTHER ARTWORK: Please do not send graphics files to INQUISITOR; for consideration as an illustrator for future issues please send photocopies (unreturnable) of your work. SUBMITTING MATERIAL: Ideally, material should be submitted as ASCII text files. Files can be sent directly via America Online to xixax@aol.com; binhexed or uuencoded files can be sent to inquisitor@echonyc.com. RIGHTS AND RECOMPENSE Inquisitor will usually negotiate for first-time serial rights for North American distribution. Now comes the hard part. Inquisitor as of yet is not a money-making enterprise. Many people have graciously contributed their time and energies to make this a magazine that I think we can all be proud of. I feel, personally, that paying one or five cents a word insulting; so for the moment I am unable to pay contributors. Thanks for your interest in Inquisitor; we hope to hear from you soon! .
