HOW TO GETAGIG AT P.S. 122 All programming at P.S. 122 is overseen by Artistic Director, Mark Russell. Mark schedules about 60% of the weekly events and supervises the curators for our Reel Time (film/video), Music, New Stuff, Avant-Garde-Arama and Hothouse Events, as well as any special events that come to the space. FULL ENGAGEMENTS Programmed by Mark Russell ext. 1 Send a letter to Mark Russell stating what you want to do and when you want to do it. Include any promotional material that might help flesh out your plans. Second Floor: upstairs events usually focus on larger scale movement oriented performances. First Floor: the first floor focuses on smaller scale events and longer runs (3-4 weeks) of performance works. ** There are no deadlines for full engagements at P.S. 122, we look at work on an ongoing basis. ** However, most of our programming is set 6-9 months in advance and we start booking our September - June season in January-February. ** Sending a VIDEO TAPE is not recommended. But, if you do include one make sure that it is a dub copy, has your name address and phone # on the tape itself and has a self addressed return envelope with postage. ** The best way to be considered for an engagement at P.S. 122 IS TO BE SEEN LIVE! Towards that end make sure that we are on your mailing list and know about any upcoming events. Mark and the staff try to see as much as they can throughout the season. CURATED PROGRAMS: AVANT GARDE ARAMA, NEW STUFF, MUSIC, REEL TIME, HOTHOUSE For the New Stuff, Avant-Garde-Arama, Music, and Reel Time series support materials are very important since our curators are part time and usually artists themselves. -- Send a video tape -- Include a self-addressed stamped envelope if you want your materials returned. It doesn't have to be a video of the work you propose but a good example of what you do. Edited videos are not encouraged, we will fast forward to get an idea of what's happening if we need to, and basically we don't trust cameras or editors. Avant-Garde-Arama Coordinator: Salley May ext.313 Avant-Garde-Arama is one of the best entrances to performing at P.S. 122. Each Arama is programmed by the AGA committee. AGA is booked about 2 months in advance and happens 3- 4 times a year. Each AGA is a multi-media mini-festival over two days with a MC and 6-7 performers from all branches of the performing arts field - dance, music, theatre, installation etc. Avant-Garde-Arama's deadline is advertised in our calendar. Proposals are accepted year round and held for the next meeting of the committee. New Stuff Curator:Clarinda MacLow ext.325 New Stuff is a shared evening of 3-4 performances, each artist presents a piece of not more than 20 minutes in length. New Stuff runs for 4 performances in our upstairs space 3-4 times a year. Reel Time Curator:Robin Vachel ext.327 Reel Time is our film and video series which features new short works by independent experimental filmmakers. Reel Time happens 2-6 times a year depending on funding and accepts submissions year- round. Music Curator:TBA ext.324 P.S. 122 Music Series presently consists of two weekend festivals of music. Exhibits rotate on a monthly basis. Submissions are accepted year round. OTHER STUFF COMMISSIONS On occasion we are able to supplement our artist fees with commissioning money. Commissions are selected by Mark Russell in collaboration with the staff of P.S. 122. CON ARTIST Artists performing at P.S. 122 can be considered for our Consultant Artist program. A Con Artist - the consultant artist is chosen by the performing artist with the help of the staff of P.S. 122 to help the artist prepare their event. The artist decides the parameters of their own consultancy - watching a dress rehearsal or having a coffee chat or coming to a work in progress showing - P.S. 122 then pays the chosen consultant an hourly consultation fee that covers from 6- 12 hours of time. Presently, due to funding constraints only artists receiving commissions have access to this program. MORE ABOUT P.S. 122 P.S. 122 is a presenting institution, which means that we do not rent our space for performances. WHAT YOU WILL GET We guarantee a minimum fee for the artists. Artists are also provided with: several hours of free rehearsal time, tech/dress rehearsal time, photographs by archival photographer Dona Ann McAdams, and a technical director who is also available to design lights free of charge. Our lighting and sound equipment and flexible seating arrangements are also part of the package. All front of house, reservations and box office duties are handled by P.S. 122 staff. P.S. 122 also provides the PR/marketing assistance for the event including press release, an ad in the Village Voice, program design and printing, press relations, and mention in our quarterly calendar. The artist is usually responsible for their own event card or flyer. Artists get access to the expertise of our marketing, box office, management and development staff members and the use of our mailing list, non-profit bulk mailing permit and access to Material for the Arts and other arts services organizations. PARTNERSHIP Artists that perform at P.S. 122 are considered partners in the presentation of their work. P.S. 122 was started with the spirit of self production, we have attempted to continue that spirit at the same time relieving as much of the producing burden as we can. An engagement at P.S. 122 can be an important step in an artists career, but it is only a step on a long journey towards a wider audience and full critical recognition. It does not get easier it only gets more interesting.
