ping @renchap - I know this is on the roadmap but there seems to be different opinions on how this works considering the 0-60 sec random delay in Mastodon before fetching. Here's a recent case.@_elena

I've just moved instance from IOCX (ioc.exchange) over to swecyb. Now, I've been extremely happy over at IOCX and the reason for doing this had nothing to do with the awesome admin @seb or anything about the instance itself. It had all to do with it being hosted in the US and I believe us Europeans right now need to move as much as possible of our Internet presence and tools out of the US into Europe. Why Swecyb? Because of admin @nopatience of course! :D

@renchap Thanks for the reply, yes, this is exactly why I pinged you. We have those who've spent a lot of developer resources on trying to sort it out their end (CoffeGeek) and others like Elena here who might not have - but the experience is still the same, creators have their web sites completely downed for several minutes after posting to Mastodon. With the Mastodon dev team quite small, could it be worthwhile to request some help from the community in tracking the core issues down perhaps? There are lots of people on here who deal daily with high availability systems and should be able to figure this out. It requires the help of someone with lots of followers though to push some test content every now and then.@_elena

@_elena We solved this in the Nordics by inventing the "coffee with lots of milk in it". After a suitable amount of those you simply _can't_ get your body to accept any more that day.I'm off to Rome in three weeks and I'm already getting worried that I might have to drink espressos instead ... ;)

@froge Hooked up my node in southern Sweden and directly connected with a bunch of nodes from Denmark. Sure the land is pretty flat here but still a pleasant surprise. @pluralistic @djoll

@gyptazy That's not a dockerized Mastodon installation then I presume? Mine (family instance) probably took a lot less than 2 minutes tbh :D (Not a Snac diss - that looks awesome, but the full Mastodon is also easy to self host)

@fsf Clarification for those that only read popular headlines. The EU Radio Lockdown Directive does not in any way specify that hardware makers should lock down their bootloaders. On the contrary, it specifically points out it should not be used as an excuse to do just that. The baseband (radio) part of a mobile phone is protected by other means than the bootloader for the general OS, and has so been for many years.

@mkj @ObsidianUrbex Just phrasing "well-federated" differently: If you have followers (even if just one each) from most of the different instances in the fediverse your account will be well discoverable through hashtags. You might want to use relays yourself though for you to be able to find content by others :) And definitely enable fetch-all-replies on your server.

TIL that the president of Signal believes that people who run Mastodon and/or Matrix servers do so "in most cases" on hyperscaler* infrastructure. This is my Mastodon server. And its UPS. And its networked KVM for when things get really hairy. It's also my Matrix server. And Nextcloud. And Git. And Home-Assistant. And Jellyfin. And SearXNG. And Peertube. When people objected to her claims, she doubled down and proclaimed condescendingly that we "don't have a clear understanding of this space". TIL that I don't feel confident in recommending people to use Signal. Something's very off here. *) "hyperscaler" basically means the big cloud infra providers with provisioning APIs that allow you to scale your resources up/down automatically with usage #Signal #Mastodon #Matrix #SelfHosting
