I'm a Linux systems engineer-turned-manager, and I can talk tech, but tech doesn't excite me any more.I'm a potter, setting up my studio again for the first time in 8 years. Expect to see pottery in various stages in my timeline.I love to make useful things, from pottery to knitting to the woodshop. It gets me away from the computer.I also love to play board games, roleplaying games and video games.

My studio:I throw on a pre-Speedball Clay Boss wheel. It's a solid performer. My first kiln is a Paragon A-66B (with extension), of which I am at least the third owner. It is older than I am, manufactured pre-1968.My second kiln is Skutt 818, from a liquidated middle school art program, used for only one semester and looking brand-new. I picked it up for $120.I have no digital controllers, but use a temp probe and cones and adjust by hand.

@anaisfae That looks like it could be a Khaki Campbell. We had a flock of them in Kansas for a few years... they're prolific egg-layers. A consistent egg a day.

@jgoerzen I made a point of learning what jobs are allowed to be paid under minimum because of tipping and mostly tip only those. Counter person doesn't get a tip because they're paid at least minimum. It's still not enough, but it's not my responsibility to make sure people are properly compensated.

@jgoerzen Come to New Jersey, where we have some intersections that have protected turns, but the turn lane has an ordinary green (not an arrow) and no indication that the oncoming traffic still has a red. So you sit there looking at the green, waiting for traffic to clear, wondering why the other guy isn't moving.

@jgoerzen I used to have one of those old terminals. At one point I loaned it to a friend who hooked it up directly to a modem to dial up BBSes, because he didn't have a working computer, but needed his BBS fix.

@jgoerzen Dynix sounds familiar. I was glad to get a computer card catalog.A lot of BBSs I was on in the 80's didn't bother with line-drawing characters... it was mostly asterisks and the like for decoration. But yeah, I remember character set incompatibilities.

@jgoerzen Heh. I participated heavily in SJ Games BBS (Illuminati) and Red October (a Champions RPG BBS where a lot of authors hung out). I used a QWK reader that would download unread messages and upload replies, so I could keep my calls under a minute. Those long-distance calls added up back then.

@jgoerzen I grew up with 8-bit computers, and it's hard to imagine a computer being annoyingly slow to parse /etc/passwd. I have forgotten just how much we waited on computers back then.

@jgoerzen My very first computer was a Timex/Sinclair 1000, with a Radio Shack tape player for storage. _That_ was some long load times, and on top of that it was unreliable, as it the tape player wasn't made as a computer device. I'd save a program two or three times for some assurance.
