We want to provide users with an exit from their technology choices while helping them stay connected to their communities. With Bounce, we aim to help them discover platforms that facilitate this. Technology choices should not hinder your relationships, and we want to provide users with the tools they need to make informed decisions. Not every platform should be protocol-agnostic, but users should have the option to easily find ones if they so choose. 7/10

Ghost is a great example of a product that uses bridges, allowing users to connect to Bluesky with a switch [4]. Wafrn got really creative and installed an ATProto PDS as a sidecar. These are more difficult to implement, but we’re excited about different products trying different approaches. All of these options matter because the Fediverse, and the wider open social web, is about variety and choice. 8/10

One important thing to remember if you care about a specific protocol is that standards are set by users who choose to use them. Currently, users are choosing ActivityPub, ATProto, Nostr, and other options, but they may want to change their minds later. If that's the case, the only thing that may stop them is losing all the relationships they've made on the protocol they initially chose, sometimes by accident. 9/10

The main reason we couldn't drag people from Twitter to Mastodon is that they would lose their communities, and this remains a core reason why users still aren't able to venture onto the open social web. Let's learn from that mistake, reduce friction, and help people find their people. If you believe ActivityPub is the future, then help people find their way here with as little friction as possible.People, not platforms, not protocols. People. 10/10

Wow, can't believe I missed that @bonfire now supports long-form articles, RSS/Atom support, *and* has an "Articles" feed builder preset. This is...starting to feel like an endgame platform for me.Full update here: https://bonfire.cafe/post/01JYRX7HCGME693BGCZF6AGGK1

"Bluesky and Mastodon are dead"Meanwhile, Kat Abughazaleh: "Bluesky outperforms YouTube, Threads, and our social media ads by about 2:1 per site."@ben similarly has said @ProPublica fundraisers do best on Mastodon.Dead for whom? On a related note, if anyone has a contact for Kat Abughazaleh, would love to have her on @bsky.brid.gy so we can help her successfully fundraise on Mastodon via her Bsky account!

At #Fedicon last weekend, I had the opportunity to present my thoughts on the open social web, what we're building at @anewsocial, and what it's taught us about how to build for people, not platforms. Our aim is The Last Network Effect, and the path to that is building bridges, not walls. You can watch the full presentation here:https://techhub.social/@fedicon/114971972582123557

@_elena I totally missed this when you posted it!I don't think you're necessarily yelling in your bubble - your blog posts tend to surface across networks, so even if you're not actively posting there, they're still being seen. But if you want to be a part of those discussions, then maybe cross-posting makes sense.

@sturmsucht We'd love to! Unfortunately, at the moment, we're mostly self-funded. We have some community funding, and we received a small grant for a project, but Ryan & I are currently full-time volunteers and still pay for most of our expenses. One of our first goals for when we get enough funding is to work w/ designers (as you said, we need them!). If you're able to, we'd appreciate a Patreon sub or merch purchase!Patreon: https://patreon.com/anewsocialMerch: https://store.anew.social

"Viewing the fediverses as a large number of independent places, shows both the value in diversity that it allows, as well as the very real challenges that individual server operates face when it comes to complying with global regulations."None of the large fediverse servers have so far complied, neither with the UK’s Online Safety Act, nor with this new Mississippi regulation."Appreciate @laurenshof coming through with an honest analysis of the situation.https://mastodon.social/@fediversereport/115096201665327235

We're ramping up our funding efforts at @anewsocial to ensure we can run Bridgy Fed and Bounce for the long run.As a non-profit, we want to be as community-funded as possible, so we're focusing on ways to make that easier.A quick thread about where we're at in terms of funds: (1/3)🧵https://mastodon.social/@anewsocial/115136283384486432

We're still majority self-funded. @snarfed.org has been donating his money for Bridgy Fed infra since before we started the non-profit, and I've been donating other organizational costs since. We've also both been (happily) full-time volunteers on the project since December 2024. Working on @anewsocial has been a dream come true, and I can't begin to say how lucky I feel to be able to work with @snarfed.org.But if we want this to run for the long haul, we need to start thinking about where the money is coming from.If you can support us, we'd truly appreciate it 🫶🏼 (3/3)
