I really love the Light Phone 3's UX. I kind of want to create a GTK version of it - maybe one that works on a single-app Wayland compositor like cage, and with postmarketOS?

While RCS is a good way to get Apple users to communicate with Android users, it's also still a terrible communications standard and we really shouldn't be pretending it's E2E encrypted in any meaningful way atm

"Who needs signal, everyone has RCS now" is a take I see more than once a week now and it's depressing. There is also not one usable non-Google or non-Apple implementation of it out there ...

@mntmn React is great! The paradigm is hard to beat once you're used to it IMHO. Plus, it's pretty transferable to other reactive frameworks IMHO (CLJS React, SwiftUI etc.)

@mntmn Wäre ohne Helm nicht mehr am Leben. Kann es definitiv empfehlen - mein Arbeitsweg sind 15 Minuten via Fahrrad jeden Morgen, ca. 12 davon auf physisch getrenntem Fahrradweg

@mntmn I'd assume this is a limitation since no one user of the system owns the background of the login screen ... the login screen does use the system wallpaper after you've been logged in after all (e.g. Super + L) :)

I wish I could fund a mail client for modern #GNOME. Geary is going to be stuck in GTK3 for the foreseeable future, Evolution, while nice, is in the same position due to it's custom widgets, and Thunderbird doesn't use GOA ...

It's a bummer that there is a whole IMAP/SMTP setting in GOA, but no GTK4 application consumes it!

@mntmn @josch Fun fact: The small rural town in the black forest I grew up in was actually served by one of those lines (S8), and they ran almost as far as Stuttgart. Here is one parked in the countryside next to the newer mainline trains more than 2h from Karlsruhe!

@mntmn It's not perfect for lots of reasons, but maybe Beeper can help if the MDM approach doesn't work out? I use it to stay in touch with my WhatsApp family members, but it also supports Telegram - it works with any Matrix clients, so you wouldn't have to worry about the in-app browsers ...

@mntmn Waypipe is such a cool tool. I use it to forward windows from a VM to my host and it's genuinely indistinguishable from a native app ...

RE: https://techhub.social/@rayckeith/115818529643049094Not open source:"Open Printer will use the Creative Commons BY-NC-SA 4.0 license for all of its files, including electronics and mechanical design files, firmware code, and the bill of materials"So it will be illegal to manufacture it for a friend, manufacture replacement parts and sell them etc. ...Openwashing should really be fought

@mntmn Tailscale is really neat, I use it for a very similar purpose. You can use an OSS self-hostable control server (Headscale) if you want to self-host: https://headscale.net/stable/Interestingly enough Tailscale the company actually supports the (fully independent) Headscale devs too: https://tailscale.com/opensource#encouraging-headscale

I managed to get my new #Palm Tungsten C on the internet and damn, it can still read RSS feeds today! Slashdot and Ars Technica were the only ones I could find with plain HTTP support, but it works really well!#RetroComputing
