@joborg @mntmn Doesn't sales tax discriminate against both goods imported for resale by local businesses and locally produced goods, versus direct imports from abroad? With tariffs on top, imports by local retail businesses still have a disadvantage compared to direct imports, right?

@mntmn @joborg As far as I'm aware, there's some extra complexity around every US state having its own sales tax rules, including on "imports" from out-of-state. Either way, if the US genuinely wanted to level the playing field, they'd need to fix the sales tax model, because it's effectively a tariff on local companies.

@mntmn @joborg Trump himself probably doesn't actually understand it; nor would the answer that the foreign-invented concept of VAT is actually more elegant and fair be palatable. In the end, the tariffs strike me as a backdoor for making consumers pay more taxes without hitting the wealthy, and while also claiming to be lowering taxes. Plus it's a great tool to keep everyone's attention on him and his tariffs and away from the fascism.

@mntmn @joborg (To be clear, I don't think the EU implementation of VAT is a panacea. The situation for collecting VAT on digital "goods" sucks, and is quasi-prohibitively complex for small business. The fees on import VAT collection by couriers are awful, especially when they ignore requests for direct reverse charge handling by receiving small businesses.)

@mntmn @joborg There should definitely be more relaxed rules and harmonisation in favour of small-to-medium businesses. I wouldn't expect to be paying less tax, but the complexity favours big business. Not just because compliance processes have a significant fixed cost, but because big businesses can afford to just not comply some of the time and still get away with it.

@mntmn If nobody more qualified turns up: I've debugged XHCI driver quirks and spec-lawyering, but not yet in any depth on rk SoCs.(I ran into an issue on RK3399 in peripheral mode but I've not successfully debugged it yet. I'm not at all familiar with lower layers than the programming interface I'm afraid, at least not beyond the most superficial degree of understanding.)

@mntmn If it‘s a logic/software issue, those symptoms would almost certainly indicate a failure to process events on the receive pipe, for example due to dropped interrupts. I‘ll need to check if/how Linux‘s XHCI driver lets you introspect/dump queue state for diagnostic purposes. Is the UVC camera superspeed or high speed? (I assume the ASIX Ethernet is connected via superspeed.)

@mntmn Could still be a timing issue or other quirk with event retiring I guess, but it sounds equally likely that your RX differential pair could be unreliable. I‘d expect the host controller report some kind of error in that situation, but the YOLO attitude to error handling could have been applied on either the driver or IP side…

@mntmn OK interesting. Have you tried a hub in between?

@mntmn @niconiconi It does sound somewhat likely. I mean different devices will have different timing patterns of event delivery, and so could trigger or mask host controller bugs. But it seems suggestive that it only happens on the receive path, only on superspeed links, and only with some devices. (signal quality will naturally vary between devices; the USB stick probably has the shortest signal paths though)

@mntmn @niconiconi I mean… before you go hunting routing issues, I guess you could try FreeBSD or NetBSD or something, to see if those suffer from the same issue. Not sure how quick it is to bring those up on RK3588 though; last I checked, there were only prebuilt images for RK3399 available though.
