I try promote to smart ideas and never give oxygen to garbage fires. I fail every now and then, but think I'm ahead on the scoreboard. Where is that, btw?

Uninstalled my Pixelfed beta app and reinstalled it from Play Store to see a fresh experience. I can't log into my pixelfed.social account because the Login button doesn't work. Using Firefox instead of Chrome on my Android 14 Samsung S22 phone.@pixelfed #pixelfed

Then I tried to create a new account. The server browser still doesn't let a new user see what's up there before having to create an account. But okay. Picked gram.social, then thought to try "Login with Mastodon" and this account. Ah, well, no dice. @pixelfed #pixelfed

Onto new account manual setup, then. Otherwise fine, but why do I have to authorize an access key for the Pixelfed app after confirming my email, when I just registered with the app? Yes I know technically I registered on browser. But intent wise I initiated this with the app. It should know that. @pixelfed #pixelfed

Anyway I continue to argue that the server specific local Discover feed should be what the app begins with. Instead, the app starts with a blank screen with "Login" as the only option. That doesn't help a new user at all. They want to see what this is about first, and Sign up second. They "know" they can't log in, not having signed up yet. If you go against expectations on this stuff, it fails. @pixelfed #pixelfed

I was hoping to advertise Pixelfed to my Instagram using friends. Better not. A bad first experience helps no one. I am hoping to advertise Loops to those who like TikTok or Reels. But it has to be *slick* or it fails. I hope this isn't what that will feel like. @pixelfed @loops #pixelfed

Logging out from gram.social I can't reproduce the first login issue I had. Login button works fine when I try it on Gram. But when I try to get to my pixelfed.social account... @pixelfed #pixelfed

That was a transient error. I get to login page on pixelfed.social again, but the Login button still doesn't work. It does work on gram.social.Now, does Pixelfed support account transfers including the same kind of content import it supports with Instagram... This I won't try to do on a phone. @pixelfed #pixelfed

@kallekn I remain unable to log in to Pixelfed app and pixelfed.social on my phone. The same problem does not occur when logging in to gram.social instead. @pixelfed

It'd help if pixelfed.org and pixelfed.social advertised other servers while that one is overloaded and only half-functional. I mean, the list is already there, but the #1 entry doesn't actually work. @z428 @pixelfed

@z428It's not changed. pixelfed.social has at no point communicated it's been running in degraded mode (federation was off, imports and migration still are) and pixelfed.org still lists it at the top of the server list. @dansup keeps saying he's for federation, but promotes a closed system. I get it, he's overwhelmed and isn't thinking clearly, but we've seen this before and this is not how it should be done.@pixelfed

Bluesky didn't reach a federated stage where you could choose a service provider in a free country before they started to censor people based on authoritarian demands.

my trek to find a new, better, IMAP friendly email/calendar service to replace gmail has taken far too much time - because I really don't like this process and I keep putting off tasks.Current contenders:mailbox.org (DE), well known and simple to understand, but without convenient mobile tools.infomaniak.com (CH), better tooling and neater UIs, but horribly confusing account model.

Before you ask, Fastmail never entered the race because of their AU/US location, Proton because they are fascism-friendly, Tuta because I don't want to be locked into single-vendor apps. Being standards-based and open protocol is a hard requirement - not walking into that trap again.

I've managed mail servers myself way back in the past, so I know how to go through the steps. I just don't want to get into the weeds. But IMAP has one nasty usability problem Gmail solved really neatly: being able to give a message many labels instead of just one archival folder.

This is also a case of controlling third party app stores and in-app payment processors while appearing politically neutral, very much in response to the Epic vs Google loss and European DMA demands. Indie devs are just collateral damage. @blog @Gargron

On-device computation is strictly different from uploading data to the cloud. Performance-enhancing functions like predictive optimization, best-shot photo selection, local translation, are strictly different from generative fake production.@eff

It's not just the databases and IT systems specifically designed to hold students' data. Last year, a data breach incident revealed that the City of Helsinki kept student, parent and educator records also on an insecure file share system. The processes which trace back to the paper filing cabinets but are implemented on citywide IT systems are what are the persistent risk. https://yle.fi/a/74-20088448@privacyint @onepict

It is so cool that I can follow a scientist stationed on Antarctica on this network that has no corporate bro interjecting ads between us. Thanks for being here. We won't break NATO. Can't make any promises for Miller though.@Ruth_Mottram
