@Ailantd forget emojis, go back to the basics:o\ *plaf*Granted, it's not the facepalm, it's the slap in the forehead. I use them interchangeably. Let me know in the comments below what do you think. Anything, really, as long as we can get distracted from reality for a while...

Just switched to #KDE #KDE6 on #Debian sid while also nuking my 20yo config dir to start from afresh. Biggest surprise was that by default (???) it's magnified to 125%, so `systemsettings` -> Display & Monitor -> Scale -> 100%. Big thanks to both teams!

@kde @Artha I think they mean RMB click, as in "context menu". Key left of left arrow:https://www.notebookcheck.net/fileadmin/_migrated/pics/tastatur_49.jpg

@_elena she can read English already, asked you to read them, or did she just liked the design?

What to try #linux? Ask around, specially friends, what distro to try. Download a live CD and try it that way. If you have old HW sitting around, try installing there first. If not, try dual booting. Test the waters before you jump. If you get into any trouble, seek help from the distro's community; many have "instant chat" like IRC or others. Mastodon is possible, but it's slower because of the async'ty and pasting config files is awkward. Good luck!PS: if the jargon si too much, just ask.

@_elena @arnav if you're limited to a single stock photo, yes, go with this one. If you can slip two photos, I would include another one with the alternatives and 'obscure' ones. With a little bit of luck, they won't be so obscure in the future :)

I keep suggesting to try #Linux via live CDs before switching, so you can find out whether it works for you. But I just realize that you can also run it one a VM.So, install VirtualBox and install it there. It will also allow you to make sure you can install it yourself.Just remember, just like live CD, it's not the same experience as when you're running it natively.

This is not new, just writing and pinning it here so I can point people to this.#OpenStreetMap's site has one big problem: people think it's an alternative to GMaps, while it's in fact a technology demonstrator. * The map itself does not show all types of features, and adding new features is a nontrivial process.* The search widget talks to a georeferencer which can find some type of features by names and resolve addresses, but can't find generics like 'butcher'.1/

       * The navigation widget does not take traffic in account and does not provide voiced, turn by turn instructions. The first item also means it's not good for mapper feedback either. One good thing it does is that it provides a ~easy way to fix things, but the editor has problems on its own that are not in the scope of this./end.

@_elena mine took over the tablet for first taking photos and then make videos. They dropped it too many times and broke the charging port. Waiting for a trip to a country where people don't reject such repairs.

@matrix just an idea to improve backups:Make exponential backoff like backups: last month, months 2-3 ago, mos 4-6 ago, 7-12moa, 2-3ya, etc. Or with N messages instead of N days.Sounds like you could recover the fresher data first, then catch up, then restore backwards.#backup #SysAdmin

@jgoerzen I've been thinking about reducing the flickering on boot, or as you put it, this:> My system seems to run with three different resolutions or fonts at different points of the boot process. One during the initrd, and two different ones during the remaining boot.So thanks for the pointers :)

#Nikon people, does anyone know if:* metadata in JPGs or NEFs include the settings used to "develop" the photo?* if they can be extracted with anything, in particular under #Linux?* if they can be used by any FOSS software like #DarkTable or #RawTherapee ?#photography

Context: I'm an amateur photographer with 0 time and/or ability to "develop" photos, so I shoot mostly in JPG. But sometimes I either fiddled with the exposure compensation and forgot to reset it, or sometimes the camera does weird exposures, so I try to recover from the RAW, but see "0 ability". Being able to start from what me or the camera decided would help me a lot.

@Ailantd I make a distintion: fedi is a social network, where I paticipate, and the other are social media, where one is a consumer. I don't consume my social :) Blurring the boundaries, IRC et al are also social networks.
