The #Fediverse can focus on praising what is good while also criticising what is bad. That's what makes us special, in my opinion. Other "social" networks use algorithms to hide the praise because only negativity brings traffic and ad click money. We are different. We can promote the good without risking being shadow-banned. Use that power. At least once a day. Deal? It takes some time to leave that pavlovian reflex of negativity behind. But at least try and you will enjoy the results :)1/3

How? You don't have to hunt for good news. When you see someone posting something positive, you can boost. Or add a reply a la "I like!", "Good!", "Thank you for that!". Really. Just that short comment shows appreciation and encouragement. And costs you next to nothing. Just do it ;)2/3

Anti-patterns: Trying to slide in their DMs (I personally make an exception for DMs informing me of a typo or mistake in my post). Replying with unrelated questions trying to move the topic to your personal preferences. Quote posting with some snarky comment that mainly serves to make YOU feel superior or more knowledgeable. You will find out that such behaviour isn't appreciated here as much as it was on Twitter or Facebook. Because — algorithms.3/3

Throwback to January 2023 where we Red Hatters visited Dublin. #LifeAtRedHat(Yes, that's the same glitzy jacket I wore at our Munich Office Christmas party this week, hence the throwback :)

If I wanted to be on a "better" Twitter after the Musk takeover, I would open a BlueSky account. It delivers the same centralised, algorithm driven experience that divides in overhyped influencers and mere click fodder users, just the way all centralised "social" networks are designed to be.And that's why I am NOT on BlueSky but here on the Fediverse. The Fediverse isn't a better X, Facebook, Instagram. It's the Fediverse. People to people. Embrace the principle and you will be happy here!

So we slowly start to see the mechanisms the US under Trump is establishing to silence and destroy critics or people they deem to be their enemy. From travel bans (Breton, von Hodenberg) to complete isolation from using US American software, banking and payment networks (ICJ/ICC judges and prosecutors). I will continue to untangle my digital life towards personal digital sovereignty. That's also why I am primarily on the Fediverse, by the way.

Also — if you are organising an international conference and still plan for that to take place in the US, think again. You are putting your international audience at risk. Not just Trump critics, also transgender people, non-white people and more groups.

If I would be living out my specific "fame", I would go to #39C3 with a t-shirt saying "I have 10K+ followers in the Fediverse". At #FOSDEM I would wear a T-Shirt saying "I use garage as my S3 object store and I like it a lot" :)(disclaimer: at Red Hat I am part of the marketing team, so target audience analysis comes quite naturally to me ;)

@evan It's definitely planned. My main goal is still to meet @_elena and discuss camera lenses and Huile Magique, though ;)

You might not notice it in your peer group, when you are not their age, but my daughter showed me that many 20-30yr olds are switching to dumb phones, are cancelling their Facebook/tiktok/twitter accounts and are discovering libraries and printed books. As a conscious decision. Not all of them, but quite a lot and it's growing.1/3

They are not anti-technology. They have gaming PCs and quite some of them are picking up software development, 3D printing etc. But they have recognised how mobile devices are sucking up their time, energy and attention span. They also have lost trust in social media and are aware that every move is being analysed. In a world that needs us all to move around with open eyes and ears because we have real world problems to solve. I am learning from them, not the other way round. Good!2/3

It's not a coordinated movement. It's leaderless (for now, and I hope it stays that way). More a set of shared principles and desires that is continuously evolving in many directions. Mistakes are made. Discussed. Typically in person (and sober, alcohol consumption is not "cool" anymore ;) Oh, and saying "I asked ChatGPT" will not go over well :)3/3

Waking up to the sounds of cars slipping on the roads full of melting snow and ice. I guess it'll be a home office day until the streets are safe :) Time for a morning coffee!

@forgejo Congratulations for yet another wonderful release! The update went as usual, with zero problems. Stop the forgejo container, switch to 14:rootless, pull the container start the service again and done :) Now to explore the new editor and see if it fixes the old $0 paste problem :)UPDATE: Yes, it's fixed and https://codeberg.org/forgejo/forgejo/issues/6568 has been closed :)
