@bleeptrack when we were passing through south-west Germany we saw a bunch of these sheepy solar parks (usually the solar was powering the EV chargers in the rest zones, I'd assume). Both the dogs and the lamb were very curious in each other :D (and you could certainly tell the sheep appreciated the shade under the panels!)

So here's the thing: I want to support artists, photographers deserve to get paid - after all I just paid almost a 100 Euros for... ten pictures. But when you charge 10€/picture and then you give out a 1024x683 JPEG compressed to oblivion... in 2025? Like, seriously??

So, according to the EXIF information, the photos were taken by a Nikon D500. That's a 20.7 megapixel APS-C DSLR camera. To put the resolution difference into perspective: 1024x638 is 0.65(!!) megapixels! Mobile phone cameras in 2005 (like the one in the Moto RAZR V3i) were already capable of capturing megapixel-resolution images. That was 20 years ago!

Okay, I'm done with the complaining, here's a more generously-sized photo from another artist.[Photo credit: Niklas Katajamäki - https://www.nkphotoart.nu ]

@ancientjames do you have a good article/explainer/link handy for "laser-etching transparent glass cubes at very specific depth for dummies"? Just curious of the physics/technology involved.(but also, cool stuff!!)

Switched from a senior GoPro to a hip new Insta360 Ace Pro.Unsurprisingly both the image quality & out-of-the-box stabilization are a huge improvement (even if I had to compress this to oblivion for Mastodon). I can definitely see a lightweight gimbal significantly helping horizon tracking and overall smoothness still, once it finally arrives. On the other hand, now I know why the headlining feature of the Ace Pro 2 is a mic wind guard. 🌬️ #pupdate #pupdaily

Much less compressy HD clip for your doggy-viewing pleasures. Impressive stabilization, excellent detail, good exposure handling. It's a nice little bby for my nice little bbys. 📸 :collieBlueMerleSmug: #pupdate

@mntmn I've been wondering for a while if we're going to see super niche extremely high-density (O)LEDs that can get close to a resolution capable of somewhat-faithfully emulating the phosphor/raster of a CRT display.

I would, umm, like to have a word with the Europeans who are switching to Signal en-masse spooked by the rising tensions with the US :awkward_look_monkey:

(by all means, *do* switch to Signal from WhatsApp and a dozen of other billionaire-owned platforms, it is an immeasurably better choice of platform for communication -- just don't be surprised if/when it becomes inaccessible in Europe due to 'rising tensions with the US'...)

@faern I wish.If shit were to hit the fan, I'd probably use Matrix (I have my own self-hosted instance), which is not exactly "good" but it's better than nothing. I guess Matrix would also win for being usable via the web browser (in case you lose access to app stores).

If you have architected your portable power station in a way that it refuses to take power from its solar input to power its loads when it is too cold to charge its internal batteries — you are BAD and you should FEEL BAD.

@bleeptrack maybe for power stations it is? But it's certainly not something that is technically impossible, my home solar charger is more than happy to power loads from solar even when the batteries are fully charged.

@bleeptrack yeah LiFePO4 cells in particular should not be charged below 0 degrees but again, there is nothing stopping you from drawing *just* enough power from the panels that cover (usually some >90%) of your output load and keeping the internal battery charger turned off, instead of just refusing to take *any* power from your inputs and draining the battery to power outgoing loads.A particularly stupid limitation, if you ask me, for things that you were supposed to take with you on camping trips and such...
