OMG, my home feed is moving at a normal rate again! Not only am I getting plush.city, I'm now also getting birb.site again and I didn't even realize I was missing out on that! After fixing the firewall issue, I can see so many more people that I thought just didn't like me anymore :blobhaj_plead: Update: also getting sauropods.win now too! I am absolutely noticing a pattern of anyone from a remotely left leaning instance being silenced or semi-silenced though. I will never use cloudflare's proxy service ever again. This didn't happen with the big instances. I kept getting mas.to and mastodon.social updates for instance.Update 2: Actually I am getting WAY more people on my feed now! If you feel like I wasn't interacting with you lately, it's not you, it was cloudflare!! We've discontinued usage of their service!(also realizing my self confidence is absolutely shit considering I just assumed 1/2 my followers/following muted me or limited my instance, but we'll unpack that later!)

A lot of people think this is by James Baldwin (who was incredible), and it's not, but it is by another Black gay man, so that's positive.https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/james-baldwin-disagree-love/

Here is your frequent reminder that mastodon.social is not a great server to be on. Here's a blog post talking about why you should move. If you're a person of color on mastodon.social, please feel free to DM me and I'll help you find some instances that are well moderated and safe. I will not list them here directly in case this post does numbers and bad actors show up.https://fedi.tips/its-a-really-bad-idea-to-join-a-big-server/

I lost some of my follower relationships after an accidental suspension by another admin :((It looks like the "unsuspension" didn't federate properly due a firewall issue... yes, it was modsecurity. No, disabling it didn't fix the issue :neobot_facepalm: )If you find I suddenly unfollowed you, or you are no longer following me, that was likely because of that. I only lost like 10-15 follows and a few followers, but still, :oof:Update: I am kinda federating again! At least, more people seem to be able to see my posts again! If I DMed you in a panic, sorry about that. I just really thought I'd lost all my social media (I'm only fedi) and considering social media is the ONLY way I'm social these days after covid, that was heartbreaking.

To my new Palestinian friends:Welcome to Mastodon! It's wonderful to have you, and I'm sorry it's in these circumstances that we meet.I will always try to share your posts to help you get reach for your mutual aid, but I have a rule of not sharing content without alt text. If you add alt text to your images, I can share your post more easily and faster. Otherwise, I'll need to wait until I'm at a computer to sit down and properly describe your photos in a quote boost. While I don't mind doing this, this means there's a delay in me sharing your post, because it may need to wait for me to get off of work depending on where I am working from that day.If you're unable to provider alt text for any reason, please feel free to use the #alt4me hashtag and someone will come along and provide the text for you that you can then paste into the description of your photo(s).Here is a guide for you to learn more about alt text on mastodon:https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-make-posts-more-accessible-to-blind-people-on-mastodon-and-the-fediverse/You can of course also ask me any questions you have! I will still share your posts btw! I just may take a bit longer because I have blind and low vision followers whom I've made a promise to always provide image/video descriptions to.

I really hate when white people do the whole "humans are the virus" thing. Humans aren't the virus, billionaires are the virus. Landlords are the virus. Colonizers are the virus. White fascists are the virus. All of these people have specific names and contact info.Stop making the mess that white people specifically have made, the issue of the entire world. You can't just decide that indigenous people who live one with the land are the virus. You can't just decide that every person is a virus because your white government (or government that is subservient to white governments) is destroying the planet.Who made the factory farms?Who has the most genocides under their belts?Who cleared the forests?Who polluted the oceans?Who pumped the oil out of the ground?Who carpet bombed entire countries? And who funded all of this?

It wasn't the indigenous people living in the amazon rain forest. It wasn't native Hawaiians. It was majority white people and their fuckin' empires that have been ruining the planet. It's absolutely not every human. You can't put your guilt on all of humanity.

@Mastodon I love the art for these posts. Can you start adding the artist at least to the alt text so they get more exposure?

Was chatting with @scremlin about this, but I was thinking about my vegan journey. I went vegan in part due to my ED years ago (around 2017-2018), but these days, even though that's mostly under control, it would have to be a conscious decision to switch back to eating animal products, and when you need to decide to participate in mass cruelty and slaughter, it's harder than deciding to stop participating. It has a totally different feeling, because there isn't an unknown anymore. You don't have to think "oh, but what would I eat? How would I get my protein? What if I'm traveling? What will my family say? What will my friends say? What will I eat on holidays?" After you've been vegan for years, all of those questions are answered. There's no "what about" anymore. You know what you can eat and you know how to do it on your own budget. You know how to respond to people. You know how to plan your diet. It's not a big to-do anymore.I used to say I was vegan for health reasons, but there's all sorts of vegan junk food and desserts these days. That reason doesn't really make sense anymore. These days I say I'm vegan for the animals and environment, which is correct. It's weird. I didn't really love animals before going vegan. I liked dogs a lot. I had a hamster as a kid. I didn't hate animals, but as @scremlin was saying, I think I put up a sort of defensive barrier against loving most animals that weren't strictly classified as "pets". These days I like most animals, even bugs. You feel different about animals when you don't ever have to see them as food, materials, or pests. And after you're past that, you kind of think more about the environmental impact. What does it take to feed thousands of chickens, cows, and pigs ready to consume in 6-12 months? How much food would you have to grow to fatten them for slaughter? How much forest needs to be cleared? How many native animals are now "pests" or "predators" that must be slaughtered for sake of these 3 main animals that need to be bred extremely quickly so a cheeseburger remains $5?Where do they put all the shit, the literal poop? (people die in those poop swamps)You also think about the human toll more.Who does the slaughter? What is their mental health like? How are they taking killing daily? (these workers have a high rate of domestic violence btw)What are their worker's rights like? (they often don't have them and suffer in pretty horrific ways such as losing digits or hands)Factory farming is the only way everyone in the world eats meat every meal every day, but it has a very real cost, and choosing to support it feels untenable after being vegan for years.#vegan

I want to assure anyone reading this that veganism is always to the best of your ability, as is any boycott. If you're in a food desert, have severe allergies to all white beans and nuts, have an eating disorder, or literally do not have control over the food you are served (caretaker unable/unwilling to provide vegan food, for instance e.g. hospitalization/incarceration/high support needs) - if any of that is true, you do what you can. That's still vegan in my eyes. You can still make small decisions when you're able, and that counts.Today I am probably 98% vegan, 100% vegetarian.I am vegan the vast majority of my meals and snacks, but every now and then I have a binge and I consume things with milk or honey. It's typically during a bad bout where I can't really control myself because I haven't eaten in a day or so, or I'm in an extreme state of stress. (typically only like once a year these days) The other issue is to prevent a binge. If I don't have access to a vegan protein bar or vegan protein shake, sometimes I will grab a protein bar with whey protein. It's pretty rare these days, because I found a great vegan protein shake that I buy in bulk, but sometimes, it can't be helped. I also can't control if my medication is not made with a vegan capsule. There's just some things that aren't going to work out, but veganism is more than a diet. It's about how you structure your life to avoid harming animals. Even if I'm not perfect, I am constantly trying to move that needle in the right direction. What was a 95% is now a 98% and one day, I'll confidently say it's 99.9%.Also, if the best you can do is 25% harm reduction, do that. Try doing meatless Mondays, change your taco Tuesday to use beans and fake beef instead of regular beef. The world is not binary, and it's okay to not be perfect. No one is. It took me years to go fully vegetarian and then 98% vegan. If vegetarian is the best you can do, do that! If you would go vegan except for Christmas or Eid or weddings with your family, do that! Don't make perfect the enemy of any attempt at all, and don't beat yourself up about mistakes. The majority of vegans out there have eaten animal products before. The majority of us were not raised vegan. We all start somewhere.

December 31 UpdateI did the math and I probably had issues with my eating disorder every other week or so for maybe 3-5 months this year. It gets better or worse depending on my mental health and my mental health has been...a bit of a rollercoaster. In those instances I was always vegetarian, but sometimes not vegan.Let's say I ate 3 meals and 2 snacks a day:1,095 meals per year730 snacks per yearThat's 1,825 total opportunities to make a vegan diet choice per year.Let's say around 1% of my snack choices are non-vegan to prevent a binge, or because a really bad binge is happening and I'm not being mindful. That's like 7.3, so like let's say 8 times, because I didn't actually have any nonvegan meals, so we're looking at like... 8/1825 or 0.4% vegan consumption opportunities failed, meaning I was likely around 99.6% vegan this year, when it comes to only diet.Let's say worst case scenario is actually 16 failures, so 2% of all snacks were not vegan, so that's about a protein bar with whey about every 3ish weeks. That's still only about 0.9% failures, and would still put me at 99.1% vegan. The point of that was originally just to know if 98% vegan was correct, but apparently it wasn't. I'm at least 99% vegan, but I was just being really harsh on myself when I wrote the post I am replying to.
