devs of bloated software should have to make a pilgrimage to bangladesh and inhale the fumes of the e-waste burn pits to understand the carbon footprint of their bloaty software causing people to buy new computers.

it sucks to have nuanced views on the internet“systemd has the right goals but also has poor architecture: i like operating it but i don’t like its underlying design” is so much harder to digest than “systemd good” or “systemd bad”“sandboxing is good when done in a way that gives users the ability to control how their programs run, and doesn’t have to make your computer locked down like iOS” is harder to digest than “sandboxing good’ or “sandboxing bad”.“verified boot that lets users control the signing key allows users to verify that the boot sequence is what they want it to be, ensuring that their FDE isn’t compromised; however, most existing implementations give vendors control that should belong to users” is harder to digest than “verified boot good” or “verified boot == DRM”.it’s hard not to sound like a corporate shill, which is the opposite of what I’m trying to be whenever I start talking about security. Fossbros have given the entire FLOSS community these warped preconceived notions on what sandboxing, verified boot, and even Systemd are and aren’t.

When I talk about website accessibility, I think a lot of people get stressed out and wonder if their personal site passes a really high bar. Some feel pressure to pass every single accessibility requirement they can.Take a deep breath.Your beautiful hand-coded personal site is probably better than the vast majority of sites I’ve complained about. Do not feel ashamed of what you’ve made. You’ve built your own pedestal to share yourself with the world, and nothing I say can take that from you because it is yours.Trying to pass WCAG guidelines is a really noble goal, but don’t make it turn your personal site into a source of panic and stress. Take things slowly. Look at one criterion a day. One criterion a week. Ask people for feedback instead of doing it all on your own.POSSE note from https://seirdy.one/notes/2023/06/11/i-love-your-website/

This account generally contains thoughts in my own words, and reposted content in the original posters’ own words. I avoid simple slogans, chants, and pithy statements about current events without further elaboration. Examples include “Support X”, “boost if you believe Y, keep scrolling if you don’t”, and “down with Z”. I’ll also make an effort to move away from idioms that serve as thought-terminating clichés.I’ll make exceptions for jokes, or for slogans alongside original thoughts or links. The line between simple slogans on social media and thought-terminating clichés is too blurry in my mind for me to amplify on my own account. I feel that the dynamics on here are different from in-person protests, and we don’t need to resort to easily-filtered/ignored repetitive chants to get people to understand what we’re trying to say. This is more of a personal gut feeling than a strongly-held belief, and I don’t look down on the use of slogans; I just don’t see myself boosting them. I’m happy to boost more nuanced, personal, or substantive posts that lend themselves less to repetition.

@winter conspiracy theory I heard some years back: major design trends, including and since Windows Phone 7, exist to accommodate product managers with no design experience who want to design interfaces and icons without leaving PowerPoint.

I’m finally able to switch from iOS to GrapheneOS. I’m setting up my phone today. Some apps I’m soliciting recommendations for, roughly in descending order of priority:An IMAP email client. will not be organizing my mailbox much; i use mblaze scripts on desktop for automated filters. Mostly need to check my inbox.Calendar (with CalDAV)to-do app. does not need sync, will probably use it offline.A feed reader. Preferably one that supports conditional-GET and importing OPML. Also interested in good PWAs.an ePub reader.an ad-free unofficial YouTube client, preferably one that supports SponsorBlock. I know some exist. I don’t mind directly connecting to YouTube servers but wouldn’t mind using an Invidious instance run by someone I trust.a terminal that lets me use commands like yt-dlp (with ffmpeg preferably), curl, standard POSIX tools, compression utilities, basic networking diagnostic/pentesting tools, jq, etc. not doing big projects or compiling software. ideally either in a sandboxed emulator like iSH or something like a-Shell with built-in binaries (including heavy hitters like ffmpeg) and webassembly extensions, but a full-blown option also works. An SSH client if it’s sufficiently better than vanilla OpenSSH in the aforementioned terminal app.Music recognition app, when I want to recognize a song that’s playing nearby.Something similar to mat2, which not only strips metadata like ExifEraser but also re-encodes the image at a lower resolution. And can work on other types of files.Very low priority but still appreciated:Network speed tester, preferably using something like Apple’s network speed protocol or LibreSpeed, along with something that shows the theoretical max for an ISP like Speedtest.net or fast.com.Favorite alternative Akkoma-friendly Fediverse clients? Already using Moshidon, Enafore, and Akko-FE.Any good alternatives to wormhole-william-mobile for sending text and files to/from my laptop? Might try that Flutter one. KDE Connect seems overkill.I strongly prefer FOSS. I have Accrescent, the GrapheneOS App Store, the Google Play Store, and F-Droid installed. If using F-Droid, I strongly prefer Izzy or the app’s own repo over the official repo for timely updates. I don’t mind using something like Obtanium with AppVerifier either.

on days when i have no time, I prioritize push-ups for upper body with arm/chest focus or squats for lower body with quad focus. What is a good single upper body exercise for maximum back engagement that requires only dumbbells or bands? I’m currently partial to renegade rows or wide-grip push-ups.

kind of amazed that using posting hygiene (alt text, CWs) increases reach on here since lots of people will not amplify posts with bad hygiene

also amazed that people consider CWs a form of censorship but not email subject lines.
