CLOVUS and JARUS walk through the town before lunch.

Jarus: At times, Clovus, I find myself despising religions because of
the injustices committed and the wars championed in their name.

Clovus: I cannot agree with you, Jarus.

Jarus: Why not Clovus? Do you deny that people make war or hurt
others and then justify their actions because their way is 'the right way', or because their religious history tells them they are correct? Is that what
you believe, Clovus?!

Clovus: I believe in the accountability of people for their actions.

Jarus: I do not follow.

Clovus: Jarus, if I hit you over the head with a chair, will you blame
the chair or me?

Jarus: I will blame you alright, then give you a taste of your own
medicine!

Clovus: No doubt you would, Jarus. Would you blame all chairs or hold me
accountable?

Jarus: I would hold you accountable, of course.

Clovus: I should use the chair to sit in, but instead I use it for my
own purposes, for my own gain. Is that the chair's fault?

Jarus: No.

Clovus: Just so, do not blame religion when there are those who would
use it as this chair was used, as a tool for selfish means, but instead
hold people accountable for their actions; for it is they who choose to
throw the chair, it is they who choose to sit in the chair, and it is
they who choose not to sit in it at all.

Jarus: Very well, Clovus, but if the various religions were not here in
the first place, all this war and fighting between people would cease,
would it not?

Clovus: It would not.

Jarus: How so?

Clovus: As long as there is a piece of land somewhere, there will be
war, Jarus. As long as there is a river running through that land, there
will be war. As long as there is a field here, or a mountain there, there
will be war. Alas, even if all the land was covered by water, and there
were people to inhabit the earth still, still then, there would be war.

Jarus: So you do not think people can live together peacefully, is that so, Clovus?

Clovus: They can, but they will not.

Jarus: Well, then why bother?

Clovus: Always bother, Jarus, always bother; for there is nothing more
dangerous than the laziness of the mind.

Jarus: Here-here, Clovus!

Clovus: And second to that, there is nothing more dangerous than a
hungry Jarus. Let us find someplace to eat, so that I may not even have
to suffer the lesser of two evils.

Jarus: Ah, you are a wise one, Clovus, a wise one indeed!
