Saw an absolutely wondeful piece today from Char Davies of SoftImage at
the Ricco/Maresca Gallery in New York City. It's called Osmose and it by
far the most artistic VR art I have yet seen. The viewer uses a
Division headset with a sensor on it to determine head position. Another
sensor is on a vest that the viewer wears. Motion through the space is
controled by leaning forward, left right and back and by breathing in and
out to go up and down. The space itself is wonderful. I've seen Brenda
Laurel and Patrice Caire's work before. Even though their concepts are
somewhat abstract, their spaces are somewhat literal. Char Davies space
on the other hand was the first truly non-literal VR space I've seen that
truly worked. It was beautiful. It'shard to describe. I'll try a
better description when I get back to Seattle next week. This weekend
I'm hoping to check out some of the new stuff from SoftWorlds which is a
3 person virtual worlds art group here in NYC. If I do, I'll fill yinz
all in.
