I don't believe "crucial" is the right word, but in order to represent a
warped space, which is what Escher does in many of his pieces, it would add to
the effect. For instance, "The Balcony". There are others, but the idea is
that by bending the image, wrapping it around a crystal sphere in which a user
is inside and views the outside, the space, say a square tube bent at a right
angle, could appear to be a somewhat straight square tube. What does this
accomplish? I don't know, but consider a street cube, as opposed to a street
corner, in which six streets meet at the cube, and the viewer is allowed to
wander around in this type of sphere. The effect might be interesting.
