Planet Magazine accepts original, unpublished short science fiction and fantasy stories, poems, one-act plays, and experimental works from anyone. Please use any recent issue as a guideline for story style and length. We reserve the right to reject any story for any reason. Due to time constraints and the volume of submissions, we cannot always give a critique of rejected stories, although we will try.
Poems MUST have SF or fantasy themes.
Please note that we rarely publish traditional horror stories but are definitely interested in SF-oriented horror, sword-and-sorcery, and weird fantasy.
We will not publish anything we judge to be porno, gore, or in violation (as far as we are able to tell) of any copyrights (such as stories that use Star Trek or Star Wars characters).
PAY:
Currently none. Since Planet is free and carries no ads, we can't pay anything except the spirit-sustaining currency of free publicity and life-enhancing good vibes.
FORMAT OF SUBMISSIONS:
Please send submissions as plain, unformatted text-only files (either as an e-mail attachment or, if it fits, in the body of an e-mail message) to editor@planetmag.com. Two submissions max at a time, please.
INFORMATION TO INCLUDE:
Please include your name, the title(s) of your work(s), a brief bio (preferably lighthearted), one e-mail address, and any Web links. Keep in mind that if we publish your work, we will use this info for your writer bio.
NUMBER OF SUBMISSIONS: A Note About Copyrights: If Planet Magazine accepts a story, poem, illustration, or other work from you, you are granting us the right to publish it on the Web (keeping in mind that many people print out Planet to read it offline). The copyright otherwise remains with the author, poet, or artist. You should be aware that issues of Planet remain online indefinitely, so you must notify us via e-mail if you ever want your work removed from an issue of Planet Magazine.
No more than two images per story, or per blind submission. We reserve the right to reject submissions for any reason. Sometimes we use previously created artwork if it fits well with a story, but we always prefer to assign stories to be illustrated.
INFORMATION TO INCLUDE:
Please include your name, the title(s) of your artwork(s), a brief bio (preferably lighthearted), one e-mail, and any Web links. Keep in mind that if we publish your work, we will use this info for your artist bio.
FILE FORMATS:
Art can be submitted in JPEG, RIFF, TIFF, PICT, PhotoShop 3, or GIF formats. JPEG set at high resolution is preferred.
SUBMISSION DIMENSIONS:
Minimum 400 pixels wide. Maximum 1024 pixels wide.
Minimum 300 pixels tall. Maximum 768 pixels tall.
IF WE ACCEPT YOUR ARTWORK:
Planet Mag will present your work in two ways:
1) Planet will present a cropped and/or scaled version that will be immediately visible to the user when they go to the story page.
2) The image itself and the title of the image, which appears at the bottom of the story page will be hyperlinked to the full size, original image. The full size, original image will, as much as possible, be kept intact. For server space considerations, we have to scale it such that the full image doesn't exceed 600 pixels wide or doesn't exceed 400 pixels tall.
Note: We may be forced to reduce the image resolution for both versions so that the images will load in a timely manner.
ARTIST'S RIGHT OF FIRST REFUSAL
The artist will be shown how his or her work will appear prior to publication. If there are any differences over presentation, we will resolve them to the satisfaction of both the artist and Planet Magazine. We want to present both the author's story and the artist's work in the best possible light, but without taxing the format of Planet Magazine or burdening the readers (or their Internet connections).
