 El Nino Strikes Oregon Green

We were awakened Tuesday morning at 7 a.m. by the familiar sirens used in just about everybody's car alarm.  We looked out the bedroom window of Melisse's apartment to see that this condo complex I had recently agreed to move into was now waterfront -- or watertop -- property.  The alarm was the dying call of somebody's drowning car, and when a big truck forged out of the parking lot its wake made the already-drowned cars bob.

Melisse's beloved yellow Miata "Sunny" was one of the drowned bobbers.

We waded outside to see that my Corvette, parked two or three spots to the left of Sunny, was also trapped in almost two feet of muddy water that had covered the seat cushions and was climbing the seat backs.  Like Sunny's, my Corvette's exhaust system and drive train were completely under water.  In the carport below our second-floor unit, Melisse's new Honda CRV was standing in only six inches of water, but was stranded nevertheless because the way to dry land was through a 30-inch deep section of the parking lot.

We waded further through the oily (and apparently poison-oak-laden!) waters to see that the water was flowing south across Oregon Expressway and flooding residences on either side of it.  Chabot Terrace, a cul-de-sac adjacent to Oregon Green, was under more than three feet of water.

When the waters receded that evening to below my exhaust pipes I was able to start my car with no problem, and so I idled it for a few minutes as water came out the exhaust like a hose.  This it turns out was not the right thing to do, except that maybe circulating water throughout the engine helped insure that my car would be written off as a total loss.

We were not so "lucky" with Sunny.  We had just recieved an offer of $10k for it, but Farmer's Insurance decided to pay for $6k of repairs rather than giving us the $11k they think it's worth.  We'll get it back on the 17th, but will have to take it back in for new seatts when they arrive from Japan in 4-6 weeks.
