Subject: First Amendment in Cyberspace: Workshop June 8 in NYC
Date: Tue, 16 May 1995 16:27:05 GMT
Organization: Maple Lawn Farm, Stonington, CT

I have helped to organize a half-day conference on the First Amendment
in Cyberspace which those in New York may want to attend. It will be
different from the usual `talking heads' speaches. It is based on
playing out hypotheticals drawn from the headlines, with authors,
prosecutors, judges, publishers, online service providers and lawyers
reacting to lots of tough questions. Walter Isaacson of Time Inc. New
Media is the luncheon speaker. Sponsors are the Association of
American Publishers, the American Library Association and the Thomas
Jefferson Center for the Protection of Free Expression.

Pre-registration is required.

Here is a copy of the press release, with all necessary information for
registration, which includes coffee breaks and lunch.

WILL THE FIRST AMENDMENT SURVIVE THE INFORMATION REVOLUTION?

Workshop To Explore Free Speech in Cyberspace

---------------------------

Privacy, computer "stalking," free press guarantees, sexually
explicit materials online, incitement to terrorism -- issues as
timely as today's headlines -- will be explored at an innovative
workshop to be held in New York on June 8.

The workshop -- Can You Say That in Cyberspace? -- is a joint
undertaking of the Association of American Publishers' Freedom to
Read Committee, the American Library Association's Office for
Intellectual Freedom, and the Thomas Jefferson Center for the
Protection of Free Expression. The free speech issues will be
explored in the context of hypothetical case studies, with real-
life authors, editors, publishers, prosecutors, and other experts
playing out various roles.

Among the featured guest role-players will be bestselling authors
Susan Issacs (COMPROMISING POSITIONS, AFTER ALL THESE YEARS) and
Peter Maas (KILLER SPY, SERPICO), publishers Barbara Grossman
(Penguin USA), and Heather Grant Florence (Bantam Doubleday Dell),
former Assistant U.S. Attorney (for the District of Columbia)
Henry Hoberman, and Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern
District of New York Pamela Davis. Added into the mix will be a
judge, a librarian and a couple of interlocutors.

Walter Isaacson, Editor of New Media for Time, Inc., will be the
luncheon speaker.

The workshop will begin at 9:00 a.m., (and is expected to end
about 2:00 p.m.) at the TIME-LIFE Auditorium, 1271 Avenue of the
Americas. Space is limited and those interested in attending are
urged to register immediately. Additional information and
registration forms are available from Patricia Peron, AAP
Washington, 202-232-3335 ext. 236.

The cost is $60 per person, $45 for ALA and AAP members.
