About Multimedia WWW PC Specifications
--------------------------------------

WHAT ARE MM-WWW-PC SPECS

World Wide Web is a wonderful way to present information to the
world. Using Mosaic you can access to a large universe of documents,
all created according to the HTML standard.

This markup language, however, has intrinsic limits in handling images
and text formatting.
The MM-WWW-PC specs allow you to overcome this limit, redefining the
WWW role to distributor of external applications.

These specifications have been created to help Asymetrix Toolbook
(R) developers in writing applications that can easily interact with
Mosaic (for Microsoft Windows), offering the remote user a better
and simpler interface.

IMPLEMENTATION

MM-WWW-PC specs may find interesting implementation
in the fields of Distance Education and Business Presentation.

With just one click on a Mosaic hotword, you can download and run
locally a Toolbook file and with another click quit it and restoring
back Mosaic window.

This result is possible only through an appropriate configuration of
the WWW server, the local Mosaic and the Toolbook application.

A STARTING POINT

These first specifications are just a starting point in the
direction of a distribute multimedia on Internet. There are, of
course, improvements to add in the future, and we welcome any
suggestion or comment from you in this direction.

IT'S FREEWARE

MM-WWW-PC software is freeware. You can distribute it without any
permission by the author.

HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS

MM-WWW-PC specs work only on PCs running Microsoft Windows 3.1 (or
WFW) with Mosaic for Windows (16 or 32 bit) already configured for
Internet connections.

The MM-WWW-PC software consists of a Multimedia Toolbook v. 1.53
system book (MMWWWPC.SBK) to be installed on your local PC.

HOW TO INSTALL THE SOFTWARE

To have your local Personal Computer MM-WWW-PC compliant, follow
these steps:

- Add in your AUTOEXEC.BAT the Toolbook (or its runtime) path
- Copy the MMWWWPC.SBK system book in your Toolbook directory
- Check that the TBKMM.SBK file and the other Multimedia Toolbook
estensions are in the Toolbook directory, too
- Modify (or add) the [TOOLBOOK] section in your WIN.INI file, so
  that it contains this reference:

	[TOOLBOOK]
	startupsysbooks=MMWWWPC.SBK,TBKMM.SBK

- Reboot your system so that changes to the path may take effect

Now, the MM-WWW-PC system book is installed and you can going on to
the following step: the configuration of your local Mosaic browser
and WWW server (if any).

CONFIGURING MOSAIC FOR MICROSOFT WINDOWS

Mosaic is able to download and immediately launch an
application with just a single user's mouse click. To get
this result you have to configure either Mosaic and the WWW
server.

Follow these steps to modify the Mosaic configuration file.
Load the MOSAIC.INI file into a text editor and do these
changes/additions to it:

Add a new data type reference in the [VIEWERS] section,
writing a new line in sequence to the existing ones.
If, i.e., the last data type was:

TYPE10="application/zip"

add the line:

TYPE11="application/toolbook"

in the same section add another line that will allow Mosaic
to associate the new data type to Toolbook or its runtime).
The syntax is:

application/toolbook="yourpath\toolbook.exe %ls"

or, if you have have the runtime:

application/toolbook="yourpath\tbook.exe %ls"

i.e.

application/toolbook="c:\toolbook\toolbook.exe %ls"

The next step is instructing Mosaic to associate the TBK
suffix to the Toolbook executable file. Add this line to the
[SUFFIXES] section so that it contains this reference:

[SUFFIXES]
application/toolbook=.tbk

Finally, save the MOSAIC.INI file in the Windows directory
and restart Mosaic.

To have more details about the other
configuration parameters, please refer to the installation
instructions provided with Mosaic for Windows.

CONFIGURING YOUR WWW SERVER (IF ANY)

If you are retrieving information from an HTTP/1.X server
(most World Wide Web servers are), the server automatically
types data for you. The extensions you set up in the
[SUFFIXES] section of MOSAIC.INI, will not have any effect
if you don't configure the server accordingly (more details
in MIME specifications).

You need to add the following line to the configuration file
MIME.TYPES of your WWW server, so that it contains this
reference:

application/toolbook tbk

To let changes take effect reboot now your WWW server.
Congratulations ! You are now MM-WWW-PC compliant !
