He was the first chairperson of the Section on Marxist Sociology of the American Sociological Association. Goertzel recently authored Turncoats and True Believers: The Dynamics of Political Belief and Disillusionment (Buffalo NY: Prometheus, 1992). The first chapter of the book contrasts his life history with that of Albert Szymanski, a well known Marxist sociologist who was at the University of Oregon until his suicide in 1985. Goertzel contrasts his experiences as a "turncoat" with Al Szymanski's as a "true believer."
