b u z z k i l l salt lake's new and improved anarchist weekly ############### nuke dump threatens utah, indians to blame!!! the nuclear power industry is in a real bind. lacking any adequate storage facility capable of handling spent fuel rods, the industry has been forced tostick this highly radioactive waste into largely unregulated swimming pools and other convenient dumping grounds across the country. the U.S. department of energy is hoping to help out by establishing a permanent nuclear waste facility at yucca mountain, nevada. in the meantime, however, as swimming pools begin to fill up and overflow, the government needs a good dupe to hang on to the deadly shit until yucca mountain can be secured. towards this end the DOE recently offered $100,000 to local governments willing to study the possibility of building a monitored retrievel storage (MRS) facility that could hold spent rods for up to forty years, after which they would be shipped to their permanent home in nevada, remaining highly radioactive for the next 250,000 years in close proximity to a major fault line. realizing that most intelligent citizens would be somewhat at odds to the idea of storing some of the most dangerous substances on the planet in their own backyards, the feds looked primarily to those communities that are systematically kept in dire economic need in case of just such an emergency, namely indigenous populations. twenty local government institutions across the country took up the chance to blow $100,000 in a phase one study of the feasibility of such a project, the majority of them reservations. of those twenty, most apparently used the money to determine that it was a stupid idea, a few, however, are still interested. san juan county, utah, hoped to move on to the phase two study with a new and bigger federal grant to the tune of $200,000, but was stopped at the state level. the skull valley band of goshutes would have, in all likelihood, suffered the same setback, especially as utahrds don't like their state being polluted needlessly when the only people making any money off the thing are injuns. yessir, we in the land of zion like our polluters strong,white and christian, and then it seems we can't get enough of the damn stuff. but the last thing this state needs is a bunch of wagon burners getting a foothold in utah's fastest growing industry, black death toxics. unfortunately, the federal government has decided to part with tradition and honor native american sovereignty just this once. the goshutes have now become the second in the country to receive the second phase grant. while the goshutes may just be fucking around with the state government, trying to scare us all a little and get some attention, the lack of competition may lead the feds to declare skull valley the winner by default, and honoring the goshutes' sovereingty may no longer seem like such a good idea to uncle sam. i say fuck 'em if they can't take a joke, i'd rather see the stuff dumped in the redskins' lap anyhow. throw it all out there in tooele, the place can't possibly get much worse than it is already. but seriously, folks...the threat of a nuclear dump in utah is real, it can't be stopped at the state level, and probably shouldn't be anyway. maybe if we all had given a shit about the economic condition of the goshutes a little earlier we wouldn't be in this mess today. nationally, native americans are fighting the threat of nuclear dumps on reservations, working together we may still have a chance. ########################### REVOLUTIONARY LETTER #1 usual last november, when the animal liberation front bombed an ADC research facility at utah state university and claimed research included stealing coyote pups from their mothers at 8-10 days old, keeping coyotes in leg-hold traps for 18 hour stretches and exposing coyotes to radioactivity, the claims were denied by government officials. but government officials often have a habit of lying, and further investigation proved this to be the case. the project did indeed inlude kidnapping pups, bottle feeding them "so they are better adjusted to humans" and then reinforcing their trust in the ultra-benevolent race by holding them in leg traps equipped with tranquilizers for 18 hours, this being "the standard amount of time it takes trappers to check their traps." the coyotes were later exposed to radioactive isotopes and 3600 pounds of carcasses were hastily disposed of before receiving NRC approval.
