Aromatherapy In the News Inspirational Moment Subscribe/Unsubscribe Info ~*~ Welcome to the new subscribers and a welcome back to those of you who joined me last month. Don't forget you can email me your questions and I will do my best to get you an answer. ~*~ Oil of the month: Lemon (Citrus limon) Usual Cost: $8.00 to $10.00 per 15ml Description: A small evergreen tree up to 20 feet tall with serrated oval leaves, stiff thorns and fragrant flowers. The fruit ripens from green to yellow. Oil is pale greenish-yellow with a fresh citrus scent. It is extracted by cold expression of the outer side of the fresh peel. History: Thought to have originated in India, the lemon has been widely used in Spain and Portugal for many conditions with tremendous success. The work of Dr's Morel and Rochaix demonstrated that vaporized lemon oil neutralized meningococcus in 15 minutes, Typhoid in less than one hour, pneumococcus in between 1 and 3 hours and Staph aureus from 3-12 hours. A few drops will kill 92% of all bacteria in oysters within 15 minutes, according to Dr. Richet. Aromatherapy Use: Skin care: Acne, anemia, insect bites, warts, scabies. Circulation, muscles and joints: Arthritis, high blood pressure, varicose veins. Respiratory system: Asthma, bronchitis, excessive mucous. Digestive system: Loss of appetite, gallstones, liver congestion and deficiency, intestinal parasites. Immune system: Colds, flu, fever, infections. Diffusing lemon essential oil is an exceptional way to disinfect your home when you have someone ill. Lemon blends well with most other oils and improves the effectiveness when combined with another oil such as clove oil, to kill air born bacteria. Lemon oil helps boost the bodies white blood cell production thus helping to fight infection. It is our white blood cells that are our fighter cells against invasions of unfriendly viruses and bacteria. Daily intake of 1 or 2 drops of essential oils in a liter of water is very refreshing and can aid in digestion. For many years herbalists have recommended lemons to assist in cleansing toxins from the liver, gallbladder and kidneys. Interestingly enough, as acidic as the lemon may seem, once they are ingested they assist the stomach to become more alkaline and reduce stomach acid. One word of caution when using this oil or any citrus oil. Do not apply it to your skin and then go in the sun. Photo toxicity can occur resulting in burns or discoloration of your skin, which is permanent! Also please dilute this oil in a pure cold pressed carrier oil prior to applying it to your skin. Lemon oil can be very irritating to the skin if not diluted properly. This has been the only oil to cause me to have a rash after application. In my opinion, citrus oils need to be diluted prior to topical application. ~*~ "A mother needs to think of herself as a scientist and her home as a memory laboratory. Each happy experience adds to the warm, positive memories her children will carry through life." Brenda Hunter Ph.D. ~*~ "Ask Jackie..." Sandy wrote: "I'm very interested in becoming licensed in aromatherapy. What program do you recommend and how long does it take?" Thanks for writing Sandy! First, let me clear up some confusion about aromatherapy licensing in the United States. The field of aromatherapy is not recognized as a 'profession' in the U.S. In Europe, the educational qualifications have been standardized so that every aromatherapist in that country has had to achieve a certain level of education before they can practise aromatherapy. In order to charge for your aromatherapy knowledge you need to have some kind of license and operate within the laws of your state. Usually people will become massage therapists and incorporate essential oils into their businesses that way. It doesn't mean you can't open an aromatherapy business, it just means you need to know the laws of your state before you do. You can contact your State Division of Occupational Licensing for more information. Here are two courses I have looked into for certification in aromatherapy. These courses will provide you with certification, which is NOT a license to practise aromatherapy. I have no affiliation with either company but the course content these companies provide seemed to be exceptional and they are both well recognized in the field of aromatherapy. Pacific Institute of Aromatherapy Kurt Schnaubelt Ph.D After completing the course you will be able to use Aromatherapy to: *treat many of your own symptoms and conditions *strengthen your immune system *supply information on Aromatherapy to others *assess and judge the quality of essential oils *design and produce state-of-the-art skin care preparations *create products for fun or profit *understand the principles of high perfumery *and much, much more The course fee is $365.00 and includes original material, reference data, work sheets and over 2 dozen essential oil samples. The course should be completed in 12 to 14 weeks. There is a certificate awarded after a final exam. For more info contact: 415-479-9121 phone 415-479-0119 fax Another very interesting course is Michael Scholes School for Aromatic Studies. He offers a Certificate home study course which includes: *300 page edited note book featuring the handouts from the live classes *20 edited 90 minute audio tapes from the best of the live certification courses (1991-1998) *3 hour video featuring massage, skin, hair, pregnancy and reflexology demonstrations *25 empty bottle for hands on blending *a selection of carrier oils *Certificate on completion of all assignments and thesis The course is $575.00 and he does give a 20% discount for Health Professionals. He also offers a Aromatherapy Diploma program which is a one year 10 module course. It's about $2500.00 or you can order each module separately at $250.00 each. The Mie University in Tsu, Japan decided to study the effects of citrus on a group of 12 men after they had such positive success with animals. These researcher discovered evidence that citrus fragrance can restore the stress-induced immuno- suppression in mice, suggesting that the aroma of citrus may have an effect on restoring balance to the immune system. In this, in vivo study with humans, psychiatrists evaluated 12 men hospitalized for serious depression who were taking antidepressants. The researchers exposed them to a strong citrus fragrance. After 11 weeks, all their medication requirements had decreased significantly, and several were able to stop taking their anti- depressants. "The treatment with citrus fragrance normalized neuroendocrine hormone levels and immune function and was rather more effective than antidepressants." We can go on doing the same things over and over again, lamenting our fate or we can look again and decide a new course of action. We can blame the fates for our state of being, or we can be something else. We can view things in the same old way or we can change our point of view. ~*~ Enjoy Spring and the aromatic gifts that abound!
