Self-proclaimed President, Ali Mahdi Muhammad, told journalists Sept 17 that eight delegations of political nd religious leaders would meet in the capital Sept 21 to prepare a national conference on the setting up of a new government. Meanwhile, the US suspended food aid to central Somalia after a plane was hit by a bullet from the ground. None of the crew was hurt. One of the main warring factions, that of General Muhammad Farrah Aydeed, has agreed to an American naval presence in the Somali coast. Radio Mogadishu said the faction agreed to such a deployment to support humanitarian efforts in Somalia. (R. It seems very unlikely that Aydiid has actually given in to the pressure to participate in peace talks. Even less likely that he should have agreed to the US naval presence. In fact, on the very same day (September 17) he rejected the deployment of the 3000 extra UN- troops in a press-release.
