Box 3074, Madison, WI 53704 SOMALIA The Pentagon has confirmed that an intervention force, made up of 2,400 marines, is headed towards Somalia. The US intervention force appears to have a three-fold mission: The first is to coordinate US planes flying 500 UN peace keeping forces from Pakistan into the Somali capital, Mogadishu. The second is to oversee and protect the US planes flying humanitarian aid from Mombasa in Kenya to Somalia. The third is to evacuate foreigners from Mogadishu if need be. There are reportedly no more than a few dozen foreigners left in the capital. US diplomatic sources say the troops' transport ships will remain 10-15 kms off the Somali coast. On Sept 15, the head of the French doctors' group Medicine Sans Frontiers said that sending UN troops to Somalia would only aggravate the bitter clan fighting there. (R.
