(Category C3 in your outline) what type of assignments and for how many points? do you only give an 'a' or 'b' -- no matter the content (or lack of)? i like this idea but would appreciate some more detail. thanks in advance. additionally, two group assignments/presentations that i have found work well in stimulating soc. thought and classroom discussion (especially in intro courses) is sociologically analyzing television commercials and also popular music of their choice. for the tv ads, they watch one hour of daytime and one hour of prime time tv ... waiting for commercials, and give a comparative analysis of various group images (or absence of images) regarding social position, role, and product sold, e.g., gender, race, class. for the music assignment, they are to analyze any popular song for rebellious content and discuss the implications for social change regarding the issue within the song. the group also plays the song for the class and provides lyrics to students. students really love this assignment, and i often learn a lot as well (including how out-of-touch i am becoming in my early thirties *smile). one more thing, i've been wanting to subscribe to teachsoc, but do not have the appropriate info, and i am unfamiliar with soc_class ... is this a listserv which deals with teaching soc. courses also? can someone please post the subscription addresses and commands to subscribe to these listservs? thanks, angela.
