Why don't we try to surface some empirical data of our own by posting information on the schools where recent candidates for positions in your department came from. It should probably be kept to junior positions, since the factors in hiring seniors are somewhat different. This shouldn't be taken as an exercise in creating despair among those who aren't in programs at the top 3 schools. After all, this wouldn't show who's being interviewed at colleges that don't have graduate programs in sociology (and thus, no Socgrad members), or who's going into non- teaching jobs. But it might produce some interesting results. I'd go first except that our junior search was called off this past year. Before that happened, an interview had been scheduled with someone from Berkeley. Laura Miller UC San Diego
