I strongly second Stephen's recommendation for the Peters' book.  My
wife picked it up when she was applying for psychology programs, and it
was a great help to both us.  Full of interesting information about the
application process and beyond.

 Robert Peters' book _Getting What You Came For_ (which I  would call
must reading for anyone applying to grad school) goes into  detail on
getting to know faculty persons who might then go to bat for  you in the
admissions process.
