We both arrived a few years ago with an M.A. from another school (without pubs), and can tell you that publishing is an expectation AFTER you get here. However, as others on this list have said, it certainly wouldn't hurt to have something published. As for the program itself, we highly recommend it. While lower in rankings than some programs, just about all of our recent PhD's have gotten academic positions, which was one of our criteria in originally deciding on where to apply.
