When I applied to PhD programs last fall, I had published one paper (in a
peer-reviewed collection of papers published by Routledge) and
presented about five or six times (with two different papers).  However, I
had received my MA a few years ago, and I had done this activity while
working at my current job (hence, I enjoyed a certain luxury of time to do
this).  I should also note that these papers were in economics, not
sociology (changing disciplines is not always looked upon favorably).
While I think it certainly helped my chances for acceptance, I didn't apply
to enough places to know how much of a factor they played.
