I don't know of the post you're referring to, but I CAN tell you that the
Census Bureau itself sells data in CD-ROM format.  You can get info
about this (and also download some of the files) at www.census.gov.

If your university library or local public library has a set of Census
CD-ROMs (which is highly likely), you may be able to copy the files for
free--government publications are not subject to copyright protection.
