I will try to ferret out the cite, but there were a couple of articles in ASR a few years ago on sociology subspecialty prestige. They used some networks methods to scale and cluster the various sections of the ASA along several dimensions... I can't remember the details but maybe someone has it handy on their shelf. To Jean's point, I think there might be an inverted U or possibly S shaped distribution to the cut of one's suit as one progresses through a career. As grad students and asst profs, left-over suit from your sister's wedding; as assoc. profs active in consulting and professional association work, decent real wool threads on someone else's nickel; as full profs, return to comfortable khakis while hosting grad student pot-luck dinners. When emeritus, you don your old three- piece with spats and walking stick to let everyone know you have absolutely nothing better to do. (One exception is for those who go into administration, where you'd better be styling when meeting with outside people).
