Naomi Wolf's book "The Beauty Myth" is well known as discussing some of these peripheral issues. For a sociological account, dig deep into the sociological archives for some of the interesting articles written by Natalie Allon (?). She devoted much research into the area of weight and social image until her untimely accident and long term coma condition occurred during the early 1980s.
