Copyright is often misunderstood.  Any work is protected by copyright
law as soon as it is written (or recorded, videotpaed, filmed, etc.). 
However, in litigation, it can be very difficult to prove that you are the
original author--it often comes down to your word against theirs. 
Contrary to popular belief, mailing a copy of the work to yourself in a
sealed envelope does not count for much.

The best protection against infringement is to register your work with the
government.  Copyright registration is considered prima facie evidence of
authorship.
