At UCONN, folks who no longer take courses currently pay a General University fee, which ranges from $42 per semester (for those who are just on the books but work away from campus) to $429 per semester (for graduate assistants). There is an intermediate fee of around $165 per semester for non-graduate assistants who do not take classes. This is based on ability to pay, and the rationale of charging most students is it keeps fees lower for the rest. This also does not vary according to time in the program, which is a decision made by one's Major Advisor and, in most cases approved, by the Associate Dean of the Graduate School.
