When I finally do the semi-homeless backpack trip across the globe I heard
about these cheap travel ideas: 

if you want to get to Japan for minimum $$$, consider the Youth Hostel and
budget travel books methods. One option given in them is to "fly courier"
on the airline. You agree to handcarry some documents and you get a totally
cut rate as an employee. The only catch is you have to travel alone. No
co-travelers.

Second, if you can take the time off from work, take a freighter (boat,
cargo ship, etc). I heard it takes like three weeks to get anywhere, but
the price suposed to be great. Hope you don't get sea sick.
