The National Science Foundation has a great program to fund summer travel to Japan for US grad students. I went in 1995, and had a GREAT time. NSF and its Japanese counterpart pay for EVERYTHING for a two month stay in the summer. The fellowship was designed for "science, engineering and medical science" students, but they seem willing to support "strong" candidates from the social sciences as well. Check it out. G.
