  I was wondering if anyone had any helpful suggestions about securing 
travel funds. I am hoping to go to a conference this summer in Japan. 
I've had a paper approved and am psyched to go to this. However, it's 
probably going to cost at least $1,600 just for the flight alone - and 
like many, if not most of us (I assume), I don't have that kind of cash 
sitting in my checking acccount. 

  So, does anyone have any suggestions? I'm in the process of asking my 
university, though they're so busy these days building expensive business 
school and engineering buildings and issuing budgetary freeze memos to 
the departments that I'm less than confident that they're going to be 
willing to help me out. 

  Incidentally, this is a conference in my primary area of 
specialization, and its a conference that meets irregularly. So, aside 
from my wanting to go for the fun of experiencing a different culture
first hand, the fact that I'd be presenting amongst those whose work is 
important to my own would mean a great deal to me.
