The conference is trying to reach out to professional societies representing academic disciplines. Could you please forward this to your professional society with your request that they participate? Interested folks may contact NAGPS, or may contact Pat Hutchings, part of the Planning Team, at the contact information below. Thanks! Kevin Boyer NAGPS Executive Director April, l997 TO: Academic Colleagues in Professional Societies Graduate/Professional Students and Employees FROM: Planning Team, 6th Natl Conf on Education & Employment of Graduate Teaching Assistants, Pat Hutchings RE: Professional Society participation in TA Conference _________________ I am writing on behalf of the planning team for The Sixth National Conference on the Education and Employment of Graduate Teaching Assistants. As many of you will know, the conference is a biennial event, sponsored by a number of national associations (including the National Association of Graduate-Professional Students and bringing together key constituents in the preparation of graduate students for their future roles. My purpose here is to ask for your assistance in bringing the conference to the attention of one of those constituent groups, the scholarly community you represent. First, some basics: The conference is Thursday, November 6th, through Sunday, November 9th, at the Hyatt Regency in Minneapolis, MN. It is hosted this year by the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. The enclosed brochure/call for proposals will fill in details about where, when, and so forth. You'll also note from the brochure that the theme of this year's event is "Changing Graduate Education," a focus which reflects the ways that issues in the education and employment of graduate students have evolved over the last decade or so. Whereas in the early days of the conference, the focus was primarily on "quality control" and "TA training," this year*s conference is designed to explore much larger and more fundamental questions about the character and reform of graduate education itself as related (for instance) to changes in faculty roles and rewards, pressures for accountability, funding patterns, new ideas about and emphasis on teaching and learning, and the state of the academic job market. Hoping (and indeed assuming) that these issues are "on the agenda" of faculty leaders from your association, I am looking for your help in three ways: 1) that you notify your members of the conference-- through newsletters, listservs, websites or other communication channels (note that the conference hasits own website at: [http://www.umn.edu/ohr/taconference]); 2) that you pass along any thoughts or suggestions about the conference program and how to make it most useful to faculty from your field; 3) that you think about attending the conference (or sending an appropriate representative from your field), in which case I would also encourage you to consider proposing a session in response to the enclosed call for proposals. Note that the enclosed brochure does not include registration materials, which will be available at a later date. I will make sure that you receive those materials when they are available. Meanwhile, please be in touch in response to any and all of the items above.
