For another option, try the Malibu Studies Hotel.  It's about $35 a night
for a single, $50 for a double, cash.  It's on the upper west side,
bordering Harlem, but in a completely safe neighborhood--plus its only
about 10 feet from the 1 and 9 trains.  (212) 222-2954.
