You might do some keyword lit searches on "social indicators."  There has
been a lot of work in this area.  I seem to get mailings for conferences on
this stuff (merely by virtue of being on the ASA membership roster), and I
wouldn't be surprised if there is a Social Indicators journal, but I am
sorry to say I can not give you a good cite right off the bat...

If you find a few good refs, re-post to the list , OK?
