The big players in the area of social movements are: Charles Tilly, Doug 
McAdam, Sidney Tarrow, David Snow to name just a few.  A good place to 
start is Tarrow's POWER IN MOVEMENT or McAdam's POLITICAL PROCESS: BLACK 
INSURGENCY 1930-1970 (I think).  Tilly is generally regarded as the 
forerunner in this area, his essential works are THE REBELLIOUS CENTURY 
and FROM MOBILIZATION TO REVOLUTION.  Also,McPhail's MYTH OF THE MADDING 
CROWD 
provides a good overview of the major theories regarding collective action.
