Just curious. As for the role of personal experience, I won't go in-depth until I read Molotch's article, BUT social science not informed by biography is not possible, at the very least b/c readers do assume a particular relationship between writer and text, even in the most statistical sources. On another list (SSSRel-l) there is currently a discussion over the extent to which it is possible to tell the religious affiliation of the author in journal articles in the Sociology of Religion. Whether it actually is or not isn't as important as the fact that readers think it is, and may judge one's work accordingly.
