Sun, 28 Aug 1994 08:37:32 -0700 for Date: Sun, 28 Aug 1994 10:28:34 -0500 (CDT) From: Michael Gibbons Subject: the church of what's happening now To: socgrad dear fellow listeners, the sociological church of mike is now beginning its membership drive. all those who wish to be armchair gods must speak to me direcctly, but for those who wish to be members of or get married in our churhc just send five dollars to.... ok so i'll admit that there is a sense of mysticism in society that makes the study a worthwhile effort. but let's not condescendingly assume that our fellow aspiring sociologists are condescendingly smirking in the light of their superior knowledge waiting for another societal folly. the point of the post is that we are dealing with our society's violence by not dealing with it *factually*. as someone responded to the individual point, it is *our* society and we are as much to blame as the news media that seems so bent on frightening us with the ugly stuff. the other point of the post was to wake up a dead list. there is no reason for sociology to be boring, and a recollection of some of the most frustrating facts of the world we live in will help us all remember why we are where we are, and WRITE ABOUT IT SO WE AT LEAST HAVE SOMETHING TO DISCUSS. taking donations, michael ps steve gets in free
